Bell KS TikTok is an absolute trend machine. Every week, something new pops up on everyone’s For You Page (FYP) and is sold out within hours. I don’t think any other platform can compete with this momentum that TikTok brings with it.
I personally am very careful before buying into trends. As I said already, they currently move at lighting speed and the waste this can cause is massive. We are at a point where everyone should be a bit more mindful about their purchasing decisions and the footprint they are leaving. I don’t want to tell you to completely stop buying from fast fashion brands (I know that’s almost impossible and not accessible), but to maybe think twice before buying a trending item. Do you actually like it? Can you see yourself wearing it when the trend is over? If the answers to these questions are no, you probably don’t need the item.
That being said (sorry for the mini ‘lecture’), here are the trends I am currently seeing all over my FYP:
Uggs Ultra Mini
I remember Uggs trending 10 years ago when I was in high school. My mum used to say they look like house slippers (they kind of do). They cycle back into ‘trending’ every few years in slightly different shapes, the comfort and ugliness level staying basically the same. They’re the kind of ugly that just works (does that make sense?). At the moment, everyone seems to have the mini ones – they kind of remind me of low-rise jeans. I would probably break my ankle in them. I do honestly prefer them to the higher ones though.
I’m going to give this trend a 6/10 – they’re cute but impractical. And do we really need a new pair every few years?
Wired Earphones
Matilda Djerf is an icon and a marketing genius. She does one thing and it IMMEDIATELY trends. It’s insane and so cool to witness. It’s kind of like Regina George in Mean Girls, in the best way possible.
I saw Regina George wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops.
Anyway, Matilda was wearing wired earphones, so that’s what’s trending now. I’ll give this a 9/10 actually – most of us already have them and they are affordable. Plus I always lose my wireless ones.
Oversized Coats
I’m not sure if that’s just my fyp, but all the cool girlies have been wearing the huge, long coats that really elevate your outfit. Throw the coat on and suddenly any old outfit is on trend.
I also like this trend – 8/10. These coats are fairly practical because they keep you warm and they trend every two years or so. Probably a decent item to invest in long-term.
